Partial dentures
Acrylic, flexible and chrome partial dentures
A partial denture replaces one or more missing teeth while the remaining natural teeth stay in place. We make all three main types and explain where each performs well — and where it does not.
Why replace a gap?
Missing teeth affect more than appearance
Over time, teeth beside a gap can drift and the tooth opposite can move further into the space. Replacing the missing tooth helps maintain the bite and can make chewing more balanced.
The honest comparison
| Feature | Acrylic | Flexible nylon | Chrome cobalt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel in the mouth | Usually the bulkiest | Thin with softer edges | Thin and rigid |
| Durability | Moderate | Good, but difficult to modify | Usually the most durable |
| Clasps | Metal clasps may be visible | Gum-coloured clasps are less noticeable | Metal; visibility depends on design |
| Add teeth later? | Usually possible | Often difficult or not possible | Sometimes possible, depending on design |
| Reline later? | Yes | Difficult | The acrylic areas can often be relined |
| Typical role | Budget or interim option | Small, appearance-sensitive gaps where future change is unlikely | Long-term stability and a thinner framework |
| Starting price | $950 | $1,600 | $1,800 |
A practical warning about flexible dentures: they can hide clasps well, but they are difficult to reline and often cannot have another tooth added. If further tooth loss is reasonably likely, acrylic or chrome may be better value because it can be modified.
How it is made
The process
Partials are built in stages. Chrome cobalt may require an additional framework check before the teeth are added.
- Assessment and impressionsWe examine the remaining teeth, available space and areas that may support clasps.
- Bite records and designWe record how your teeth meet and plan the denture around your existing teeth.
- Try-in or framework checkYou can review the appearance; chrome frameworks are checked for fit before completion.
- Fitting and reviewThe partial is fitted, then adjusted after you have used it in daily life.
Common questions
Partial denture FAQs
Do I wear a partial denture all day?
Wear it during the day as advised so your mouth can adapt and the denture can support the bite. Remove it overnight for cleaning and to rest the tissues.
Can a partial damage the remaining teeth?
A well-designed partial should distribute load sensibly. Cleaning is critical because plaque can collect around clasps and contact areas on the natural teeth.
Is it too late if the tooth was lost years ago?
Usually not, but movement of neighbouring teeth can reduce the available space or change the design options. An assessment will show what is practical.
Not sure which material suits you?
Describe the gap and your remaining teeth over the phone. We can often explain the likely options before arranging a visit.
