First aid for a broken denture

What to do the moment it breaks

Keep every piece, including small fragments, and place everything in a clean zip-lock bag. A clean break with all pieces present is usually easier to assess than a denture that has been glued, trimmed or worn after breaking.

Do not use superglue or a household repair kit. Glue can contaminate the acrylic, prevent repair material from bonding properly and lock the fracture in the wrong position. Sharp or loose pieces can also cut the mouth or create a choking risk.

Pickup and return

How the repair process works

Our pickup-and-return service is designed to keep things straightforward when travelling without teeth would be difficult.

  1. Call and describe the damageTell us where the denture has broken, whether every piece has been kept and the suburb where collection is needed. A clear photograph may also help us understand the likely repair.
  2. We arrange collectionThe denture can be handed over by the patient, a family member, carer or aged-care facility staff member. Keep it dry and protected in a clean bag or container.
  3. We assess, repair and return itSuitable repairs are completed in our own laboratory. We confirm the likely cost and available turnaround before work begins, then arrange return and any required fit check.

A loose denture

Relines refit the denture to the shape of your gums today

Dentures do not stretch. The jaw and gum tissues change beneath them, so a denture that once fitted well can begin to rock, trap food, rub or need increasing amounts of adhesive. A reline replaces the fitting surface while keeping the existing denture.

Standard refit

Hard reline

A hard reline uses rigid denture-base material to create a new fitting surface. It is the usual option when the denture is otherwise sound and the underlying tissues can comfortably support a firm base.

Cushioned surface

Soft reline

A soft reline uses a more forgiving lining for tender or heavily resorbed ridges. It may improve comfort but generally requires more maintenance and more frequent replacement than a hard reline.

Signs to request a fit check: increasing adhesive use, food beneath the plate, rubbing sores, clicking, rocking or movement when chewing.

Fix the cause

Repeated fractures often point to a fit problem

If a denture keeps breaking in the same place, the acrylic may be flexing because the base no longer sits evenly on the gum. In that situation another repair may only treat the symptom. A reline or, for an older denture, a remake may provide a more durable result.

Common questions

Repair and reline FAQs

Can every denture be repaired?

Most acrylic dentures can be assessed for repair, including clean fractures. Chrome frameworks and many flexible nylon dentures are more limited, so we explain the realistic options before work begins.

How long will the repair take?

Turnaround depends on the fracture, replacement parts and collection route. Call with a description of the damage and your suburb, and we will provide the most accurate available timing before making arrangements.

Can you tell whether my denture is repairable over the phone?

Often we can narrow it down from a description or clear photograph. Keep every piece and call before attempting any temporary repair.

Can a family member or facility staff member hand it over?

Yes. We can arrange collection and return through a family member, carer or facility staff member when that is more practical.

How often should a denture be relined?

There is no fixed interval because mouths change at different rates. Request a fit check when the denture begins to move, rub, trap food or rely on more adhesive.

Northside Denture Clinic is led by Lev Terterian, a registered dental prosthetist. You can check registered health practitioners through the Ahpra Register of practitioners.
